Diversity -- Why Not?
First Book has been re-circulating this infographic via Twitter. It's so disheartening to see that children's books still don't proportionately represent the children who read them. Identifying with characters in a book can be so edifying and reassuring for kids, and it's important for all children to read a wide variety of books featuring characters from different ethnic, cultural, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
On a related note, I found this beautiful post on a blog called All Brown All Around (a reference to Sandra Cisneros' The House on Mango Street). Give it a read! The author, Celia C. Perez, has some great ideas about addressing the lack of diversity in children's books.
